Mission:
Our mission is to teach Chinese values and culture through weekend language education, working in conjunction with the Heritage Chinese Center to develop heritage language curriculum that teaches Chinese-American youths.
Learning Outcomes:
- Chinese Literacy and Communication
- Reading: to be able to read a wide range of age-appropriate Chinese language material and extrapolate unknown characters through context.
- Writing: to be able to effectively tell a story and express themselves in an organized and sequential manner
- Speaking: to be able to express their opinions on a wide range of topics with peers and elders
- Cultural Understanding and Competency
- To be able to understand events, stories, folktales integral to Chinese culture, and to feel a connection to their cultural history.
- To be able to compare and contrast aspects of Chinese culture with American culture, and synthesize it as part of their own identity formation
- Understanding and Application of Chinese Values
- To understand the core values of Chinese culture (天人合一 one with nature,以和为贵 value harmony, 以人为本 humanity as fundamental,自强不息 constant self improvement,厚德载物virtue and tolerance)
- To be able to make their own assessment of traditional Chinese values and judge whether it can apply to their own lives.
